Because senior year isn’t only about where you’re going next. It’s about remembering who you are right now.
When I think about senior photo ideas, I don’t start with poses. I start with the person we’re documenting and the season they’re in.
You’re still living in your childhood bedroom, listening to the songs you’ll probably hear twenty years from now and immediately remember this time in your life, spending time with friends who are part of your everyday world, and at the same time, everyone is asking:

What’s next?
Where are you going? What are you studying? What do you want to do? Who are you going to become?
But before everything starts changing, I think there’s another question worth asking:
Who are you right now?
That’s what we want your senior session to preserve.
Not just what you looked like. Photographs you can show your children one day and say, this is who I was. Photographs your parents can look at years from now and vividly remember this season of your life.
And yes, make the Pinterest board. I actually encourage it. Send me the outfits, locations, poses and photographs you’re drawn to.
But we’re not recreating someone else’s senior pictures.
Pinterest can help us dream.
But you are the story.

1. Choose a Location That Adds to the Story
We can take beautiful photographs almost anywhere, but the right location gives us more to work with.
Love water? We can use the white sand and lake at Klondike Park. More at home outside? Think lakes, fields and golden roads at Busch Wildlife. Want architecture and city energy mixed with nature? Forest Park gives us both.
Or maybe your story is better told at home, in your bedroom, on the football field, at the barn or somewhere you’ve spent half your childhood.
Don’t only ask “Where would pictures be pretty?”
Ask: “Where does my life happen?”
2. Wear Something That Actually Feels Like You
Of course we’ll talk about what photographs well, but don’t show up in three outfits that don’t feel like you just because they look like “senior picture outfits.”
Bring the dress.
But bring the beat-up jeans, vintage tee, cowboy boots, uniform or jacket everyone associates with you too.
Sometimes the things that feel ordinary now become the things you miss the most later.
3. Make Your Hobbies Part of the Story
Don’t just bring the guitar. Play it.
Don’t just hold the soccer ball. Let’s get on the field.
Dance. Paint. Ride your horse. Work on your car. Bring your books. Create something.
Your interests aren’t props. They’re part of who you are in this season, and actually doing them gives us movement, personality and photographs that feel alive.

4. Make a Playlist
I want to know what you’re listening to right now.
Music helps you relax, move and forget about the camera, but it also tells part of your story.
Songs are time machines.
Let’s give this season a soundtrack.
5. Bring Your People
Your senior session doesn’t have to be only you.
Bring your best friend, sister, mom, boyfriend, or your dog.
We can even turn part of your session into an experience: getting ready together, dancing in the kitchen, grabbing food, driving around listening to music or creating a sleepover scene.
The people you love are part of this season too.

6. Think Like a Movie, Not a Photoshoot
What’s your favorite movie? Show? Music video?
Instead of recreating a photo you saw online, tell me what you love about how it feels.
Is it nostalgic? Wild? Romantic? Moody? Adventurous? Playful?
Then let’s create our own version.
Let’s make your music video. Let’s make your movie of this season of life.
7. Leave Room to Have Fun
Not everything needs to be planned.
Some of my favorite photographs come from a ridiculous idea we have in the middle of a session.
Get in the water. Run across the field. Stop somewhere unexpected. Dance in the parking lot. Put on the weird outfit.
Your senior session should tell your story.
But it should also be fun to live while we’re creating it.
This Season Is Worth Remembering
There will be plenty of time to photograph the woman you’re becoming.
Right now, I want to preserve the one who’s already here.
The music you love. The people you can’t imagine life without. The things you’re passionate about. Your personality. Your dreams. The places that feel like home.
Because these aren’t only senior pictures.
They’re a record of a season that is about to change.
And someday, when you or your parents look at them again, I hope you don’t only remember what you looked like.
I hope you remember exactly who you were.
